Doctors Warn Less Than 3% of Indian Women Get Screened as Breast Cancer Hits Younger Ages

by Shreeya

Breast cancer is no longer confined to women aged 40-50, experts warned at IMSCON-26, the national conference of the Indian Menopause Society. Doctors reported that women as young as 24 are now being diagnosed with the disease, raising serious concerns about early detection and prevention.

Speaking at the conference, which was inaugurated by Indian Menopause Society National President Dr. Anita Shah alongside Dr. Sudha Sharma, Dr. Shashi Srivastava, Dr. Vaijayanti, Dr. Manisha Khare, and Dr. Shraddha Agarwal, experts emphasized the urgent need for regular screening. While at least 90% of women should be tested, less than 3% in India undergo breast cancer screening. Without timely screening and vaccination, cancer cases and related deaths could rise sharply in the coming years. Agra-based gynecologist Dr. Aarti Gupta was also announced as the next National President of the Society.

Rising Cases Linked to Lifestyle Changes

Dr. Anjana Chauhan, a surgical oncologist from Ahmedabad, highlighted the surge in breast cancer cases among young women. She attributed the rise to unhealthy lifestyles, including junk food, obesity, lack of exercise, late-night routines, stress, and hormonal imbalances. Previously, breast cancer predominantly affected women over 45, but now cases are increasingly reported among women in their 20s and 30s.

“Cancer at a young age tends to be more aggressive, making early detection critical,” Dr. Chauhan said.

Screening Rates Alarmingly Low

Dr. Chauhan stressed that reducing deaths from breast and cervical cancer requires regular screening for at least 90% of women. Yet, awareness remains limited, particularly in rural areas, while urban women often delay checkups due to fear, stigma, or negligence. Early detection can lead to complete recovery, but delayed diagnosis complicates treatment and increases costs.

Cervical cancer, caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV), was also highlighted. The virus can remain dormant for years before progressing to cancer. The HPV vaccination campaign, starting February 28, aims to immunize 14-year-old girls and could significantly reduce future cervical cancer cases, although current vaccination rates remain low.

First Live Tele-Surgery Demonstrated at Conference

IMSCON-26 featured a groundbreaking surgical workshop at HER Hospital. Gynecologist Dr. Priya Bhave Chittawar performed telerobotic surgery from her OPD using VR goggles while the patient was in the operation theater. Every movement of the doctor’s hands was transmitted directly to the robotic system, successfully removing the patient’s uterus in an hour-long procedure. Experts attending the conference observed the live telecast, marking the first time such a demonstration was broadcast from an OPD at a conference.

Post-Menopause Health Risks

Dr. Aarti Gupta discussed the double health risks women face after menopause. Estrogen decline weakens bones, doubling the risk of osteoporosis compared to men. This rapid bone density loss increases fracture risk for women in their 60s and 70s. Dr. Gupta emphasized that peak bone mass develops during childhood, and lack of physical activity, poor nutrition, and low vitamin D during early years raise future health risks.

She recommended children engage in at least one hour of daily physical activity and 30 minutes of sunlight exposure. Estrogen deficiency post-menopause also thins the vaginal lining, increasing infection risk, while widespread vitamin D and B12 deficiencies contribute to fatigue, weakness, and bone pain.

Public Awareness and Screening Drive

To improve awareness and access, a public forum will be held on March 1, allowing women to consult experts directly. Discounted mammography and cervical cancer screening coupons will also be provided.

Doctors reiterated that awareness, early screening, vaccination, and healthy lifestyle changes are crucial for reducing cancer risk and safeguarding women’s health.
