A Scots mother has shared her terrifying experience after a £15,500 breast surgery left her fighting for her life when her implant began leaking “green fluid.”
Lisa Hart, 45, from Ayrshire, sought a breast reduction and reconstruction in Glasgow after feeling self-conscious about her size 36E breasts following the birth of her children. She underwent a four-hour procedure at a private clinic in May 2025.
Just one week after surgery, Lisa noticed a “green fluid” seeping through her bandages from her right breast. Although the clinic initially reassured her that the discharge was normal, her condition worsened over the following month. A small hole developed in the breast, and she began experiencing fever-like symptoms.
By June 2025, Lisa was admitted to Ayr University Hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with sepsis and urgently removed the right implant. “There was a point where I thought I would die,” she said. “You hear horror stories, but never did I think it would happen to me here in Glasgow.”
The ordeal has left Lisa with uneven breasts—her right now a B-cup and left a C-cup—and she must return to the same clinic for corrective surgery, as other providers have refused to operate. She described the emotional toll as devastating: “The entire ordeal has left me with rock-bottom confidence. I just look back at my before photos and cry. Having the perfect body isn’t important—everyone is perfect.”
Lisa and her husband, Steven, 54, initially chose the UK clinic over potentially cheaper options abroad, spending £15,500 in the hope of achieving her “dream body.” She was discharged just an hour after surgery, but within days, the right breast began leaking, the skin split, and a hole formed below the nipple. Attempts to contact the clinic for help reportedly went unanswered for weeks.
Desperate, Lisa sought hospital care where sepsis was confirmed within seconds. She spent ten days hospitalized and continues to face physical and mental health challenges, including stress-induced angina. “Every day, I have to wear baggy clothing to hide my chest and even looking in the mirror is difficult,” she said.
