Scientists are exploring whether drugs derived from cannabis could offer new treatment options for ovarian cancer, one of the deadliest gynecological cancers. A recent study tested two cannabis-derived compounds—CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol)—on ovarian cancer cells and found promising anti-cancer effects.
While further research is needed to develop these findings into patient-ready treatments, the study represents a potential breakthrough for a cancer that is difficult to diagnose and treat.
“Ovarian cancer remains one of the deadliest gynecological malignancies, characterized by late diagnosis, high recurrence rates, and limited effective treatment options,” said Dr. Siyao Tong of Khon Kaen University, lead author of the study published in Frontiers in Pharmacology. “Our goal is to find alternative drugs that improve efficacy and reduce toxicity, ultimately offering new hope to patients.”
A Deadly Illness
Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among gynecological cancers. Existing treatments can be ineffective and often carry severe side effects, highlighting the urgent need for new therapies.
Because CBD and THC have shown anti-cancer potential in other malignancies, the research team tested their effects on two ovarian cancer cell lines: one sensitive to platinum-based chemotherapy and one resistant. Healthy cells were also included to evaluate potential toxicity.
The results showed that both CBD and THC reduced the formation and size of cancer cell colonies. While each compound alone had a moderate effect, combining them proved far more effective. The most potent results occurred when CBD and THC were used in a 1:1 ratio.
The compounds also inhibited cell migration, suggesting they may help prevent metastasis, a leading cause of ovarian cancer deaths. Both cancer cell lines responded similarly, indicating potential effectiveness across different ovarian cancer types. Importantly, healthy cells were minimally affected, suggesting a potentially lower toxicity profile than current treatments.
Mechanisms and Implications
Further analysis revealed that CBD and THC appear to regulate the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, which is often overactive in ovarian cancer and contributes to tumor growth and drug resistance. By restoring normal pathway regulation, the compounds hindered cancer cell reproduction and induced cell death.
Next Steps
Despite promising results, Dr. Tong emphasized that the study is preliminary. “All experiments were conducted in vitro, so the results may not fully reflect tumor behavior in living organisms,” she said. The team did not yet study animal models or pharmacokinetics, both of which are critical for evaluating safety and clinical feasibility. Regulatory and legal issues surrounding cannabinoid therapies may also affect future research.
“Although our study is still preliminary, it lays an important foundation for exploring CBD and THC in ovarian cancer treatment,” Tong added. “By confirming anti-cancer activity and identifying key molecular mechanisms, these findings may guide future preclinical studies and, eventually, contribute to new treatment strategies.”
