Pregnancy May Affect the Results of Laser Hair Removal Due to Hormonal Changes

by Shreeya

Pregnancy is a unique and transformative time. Alongside preparing for a baby, many women experience side effects such as morning sickness, fatigue, and hormonal changes that can affect daily life. One of the more curious effects, however, involves hair growth—sometimes in unexpected places, including the stomach, face, breasts, arms, and neck.

These changes are driven by a surge in hormones, particularly estrogen and androgens, which support the pregnancy and prepare the body for childbirth. Hair growth in unusual areas is common and usually fades after delivery. Pregnancy also alters the hair growth cycle, delaying the shedding phase, or “exogen,” which often results in thicker, fuller hair. About three to six months postpartum, hormones begin to normalize, and the extra hair may fall out in a process called telogen effluvium.

Understanding these changes is important for those considering laser hair removal. Dr. Raj Arora, GP and FOREO ambassador, advises against laser hair removal during pregnancy. “The main reason is the lack of research on its safety for both mother and fetus,” she tells Marie Claire UK. “Although no direct harm has been documented, hormonal changes can make skin more sensitive, increasing the risk of irritation or hyperpigmentation.”

Pregnancy’s impact on hair can also affect previously treated areas. Podcaster and reality TV star Sophie Habboo recently shared that pregnancy caused a near-complete return of hair in areas she had treated with laser hair removal. Dr. Arora explains: “Not all hair will necessarily return, but hormonal changes can trigger new hair growth or alter the regrowth cycle, making hair appear thicker or more abundant.”

The underlying cause is hormonal fluctuation. Increased estrogen and other hormones can stimulate hair growth and change the normal cycle, even in areas previously treated with laser hair removal.

For those eager to resume treatment, Dr. Arora notes that it is generally safe after childbirth once hormone levels stabilize and breastfeeding has ended. “Consult a healthcare provider for personalized advice,” she advises.

At-home IPL devices remain a popular option for ongoing hair reduction. Nessa Humayun, Marie Claire UK’s Beauty Editor, praises the Bondi Body V2 Laser for its effectiveness and ease of use, noting visible hair reduction after a few sessions. Jadie TroyPryde, Marie Claire UK’s News Editor, highlights the Foreo Peach 2 device for its convenient design, adjustable intensity, and efficient treatment schedule. Both devices offer a practical solution for maintaining smooth skin after pregnancy.
