A new study on brain development suggests that male adolescence lasts until around age 32. Researchers from the University of Cambridge analyzed more than 4,000 brain scans and identified four key stages in brain development, revealing that the “adolescent” phase extends far longer than previously believed.
According to the findings, the brain undergoes continuous rewiring throughout life, strengthening and weakening connections in distinct phases. Lead researcher Dr. Alexa Mousley explained to the BBC that these developmental shifts vary between individuals but generally follow a recognizable pattern.
The study outlines five major periods of brain evolution. Childhood lasts until about age nine, followed by a long adolescent stage stretching to 32. This is then succeeded by adulthood, which continues until about 66, before the brain enters a final aging phase around 83.
Researchers noted that this extended adolescence may explain impulsive or restless behavior often observed among men in their twenties. The brain’s structure, particularly its communication networks, remains in flux during these years. White matter continues to grow and refine, supporting improved coordination between regions until early adulthood. Around age 32, the brain experiences its most significant rewiring shift.
Dr. Mousley emphasized that while puberty provides a clear beginning for adolescence, identifying its endpoint is more complex. “Based on neural architecture alone, adolescent-like changes continue into the early thirties,” she said.
The findings suggest that male identity formation and social development also follow these timelines, aligning with broader patterns in men’s health and behavior. For men approaching their thirties, the research offers a scientific perspective on why youthful tendencies may linger a little longer than expected.
