Public calls for a national prostate cancer screening programme have gained momentum in the UK following former Prime Minister David Cameron’s announcement that he has been successfully treated for the disease.
Mr Cameron said that his wife, Samantha, encouraged him to get checked after hearing a radio interview about prostate cancer. His disclosure has led to a surge of public interest; Prostate Cancer UK reports more than a seven-fold rise in people using its online risk-checking tool since the news broke.
The former prime minister has now joined campaigners urging the government to introduce targeted screening for prostate cancer. The issue was also raised recently in the Isle of Man’s House of Keys, where Health Minister Claire Christian was questioned about possible screening plans.
Malcolm Clague, Chairman of the Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association, said he supports the idea of a dedicated screening programme but noted that existing tests are still not accurate enough. “The current tests are not really specific enough for such a targeted approach,” he explained.
According to the NHS, prostate cancer often develops without early symptoms. The disease usually starts on the outer part of the prostate, which means it can grow unnoticed until it affects the urethra, causing potential changes in urination.
Common prostate cancer symptoms can include difficulty starting or maintaining a urine flow, needing to urinate frequently or urgently, and waking during the night to urinate. In more advanced stages, men may experience erectile dysfunction, blood in urine or semen, lower back pain, or unexplained weight loss.
Health experts continue to debate the need for national screening as research seeks more reliable diagnostic methods. Meanwhile, public awareness campaigns emphasize the importance of recognising prostate cancer symptoms early and seeking timely medical advice.
