New Research Shows Estrogen Pills Enhance Fertility With Herbs

A recent study suggests that Jinfeng Pills, a traditional Chinese herbal formula, may help restore a thin endometrium, a common cause of infertility.

The study found that the herbal formula increased endometrial thickness and improved blood vessel and gland formation. It also boosted molecular markers that support a receptive uterine environment.

Thin endometrium, defined as a uterine lining under 7 mm, affects about 2.5% of women experiencing infertility. It can result from repeated uterine procedures, infections, or hormonal imbalances. These conditions reduce blood flow and prevent proper endometrial growth, making embryo implantation difficult. Current treatments are limited, leaving many patients with few options.

What Are Jinfeng Pills?

Jinfeng Pills are a traditional Chinese medicine formula historically used in imperial palaces. The prescription combines herbs and animal-derived ingredients thought to support reproductive health by improving circulation, balancing hormones, and strengthening organ systems. Key ingredients include Epimedium, Citronella, Motherwort, Cinnamon, Ass Hide Glue, Velvet Antler, Ginseng, Privet Fruit, and Polygonum multiflorum.

Study Design and Findings

Researchers created a thin endometrium model in rats using controlled chemical injury. Rats were divided into four groups: untreated control, model (no treatment), estrogen-treated, and Jinfeng Pills-treated.

Using techniques like histological staining, ELISA, immunofluorescence, and qPCR, the team analyzed structural changes in the endometrium, serum biomarkers, and gene/protein activity important for implantation.

Rats receiving Jinfeng Pills had a significantly thicker endometrium, restored wavy structure, higher gland density, and improved vascularization. Serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), critical for blood vessel formation, were also higher.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, Jinfeng Pills “warm the kidney, tonify Yang, nourish the liver and spleen, regulate Chong and Ren vessels, and promote blood circulation.” This study provides a molecular explanation for these effects, showing the formula enhances vascular regeneration, supports endometrial repair, and improves conditions for embryo implantation.

“This study experimentally confirms the efficacy of Jinfeng Pills for thin endometrium in rats and begins to clarify its mechanism,” the authors said. The findings suggest potential integrative approaches, combining traditional medicine with modern reproductive technologies to help patients achieve successful pregnancies.
