IVF Success for Women Over 43 Hinges on Donor Eggs, Study Finds

by chenlulu

Donor eggs significantly improve IVF success rates for women aged 43 and older. The study found that success rates using a woman’s own eggs (not previously frozen) drop below 5% after age 42, while donor-egg treatments achieve success in more than one-third of cycles across all age groups.

The researchers analyzed data from the United Kingdom’s Human Fertilization and Embryo Authority, spanning 1991 to 2018, including over 1.2 million treatment cycles and more than half a million patients beginning their first ART treatment. During this period, ART use rose more than fourfold, and overall success rates nearly doubled, yet age-related declines persisted when using a patient’s own eggs.

Interpretation

The findings indicate that the biological age of the eggs drives IVF outcomes more than the age of the woman herself. Lead researcher Luzia Bruckamp explains that, although ART has become more effective overall, it cannot overcome certain egg-related biological limits. Senior researcher Ester Lazzari notes that egg donation and egg freezing have limitations and may not fully offset fertility losses from delayed childbearing.

Implications

These results may help explain global declines in fertility and highlight that many individuals delay parenthood without fully understanding the impact on IVF success. The authors advocate informing patients about the relative effectiveness of donor eggs for older women and considering options such as earlier egg freezing to support reproductive choices.

The study also underscores the potential value of family-friendly policies to encourage earlier parenthood, including family leave, flexible work arrangements, and better financial support.

Practical Takeaways

For women over 43 considering IVF, donor eggs are often the most reliable option for achieving pregnancy. Those considering delaying parenthood should discuss egg freezing and other strategies with fertility specialists to inform their decisions.
