Women who miss their first breast cancer screening appointment face a 40% higher risk of dying from the disease, according to a major new study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). Results revealed that 32% of women did not attend their first mammogram appointment. Among those who skipped, the mortality rate reached 9.9 deaths per 1,000 women over 25 years, compared to seven per 1,000 among women who attended their first screening.
Importantly, researchers noted that while breast cancer incidence rates were similar between both groups, the mortality difference stemmed from delayed detection and later-stage diagnoses among non-attendees.

Hope in Cancer Research: New Pancreatic Cancer Discovery
Despite these alarming statistics, new scientific advances are offering hope. In a separate development reported in Nature, researchers have identified a protein target, SPP1, that could halt the spread of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC)—the most common and aggressive form of pancreatic cancer.
By blocking SPP1, scientists were able to stop cancer metastasis and extend survival times in experimental models. Professor Axel Behrens, a stem cell biology expert at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, said the discovery could lead to new drug therapies designed to inhibit the protein.
“The next step,” Behrens noted, “will be to develop a drug that can precisely target the protein—potentially keeping patients living well for longer.”
