Simonsen, a long-time Avera Health employee and ultrasound technician, experienced unexplained fertility issues despite previously conceiving twins. After consulting with her gynecologist, Dr. Amber Saloum, an ultrasound initially revealed what was believed to be an ovarian cyst alongside suspicious pelvic irregularities.
“Endometriosis occurs when endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus, causing inflammation and adhesions that can severely impact a woman’s quality of life,” explained Dr. Saloum.
Surgical intervention confirmed extensive adhesions from endometriosis alongside the ovarian cyst, which was removed. Post-surgery, Simonsen was prescribed Depo-Lupron, a medication shown to shrink endometrial lesions by suppressing hormones, leading to significant improvement over three months.
Thanks to timely diagnosis and personalized care, Simonsen successfully conceived again, defying initial concerns. “It was encouraging to have medical professionals guide me through options and support my goal of having another child,” she shared.
