Severe Infection Leads Woman to Prefer Period Underwear Only

by Shreeya

A woman has completely stopped wearing traditional underwear after a night spent sleeping in her usual knickers resulted in a severe vaginal injury and months of medical complications.

Kaela Tucker, 26, developed a painful laceration from chafing, which became infected and required urgent hospital treatment. Several days later, she was rushed to A&E when the wound evolved into a 4.8cm Bartholin cyst—a fluid-filled blockage in the gland within the labia—causing excruciating pain and preventing her from sitting or standing comfortably.

“I couldn’t sit, stand, or even lay down,” Tucker recalled. “I had to ride to the hospital lying on my side because of the pain.” Blood tests revealed a significant infection, and doctors warned that she could have gone septic if treatment had been delayed.

Tucker underwent intensive care, including multiple intravenous antibiotics, while doctors hoped the cyst would drain naturally. It eventually burst, bringing immediate relief but intense pain that she described as worse than previous reconstructive foot surgeries.

Despite initial hospital care, Tucker alleges that she was discharged with an open wound, which became re-infected over the following months. She consulted several OBGYNs, receiving various treatments including antibiotics and antifungal creams, but the injury persisted. By June 2024, the cyst had returned, and she was hospitalized again for five days.

A change in medical care at the end of July led to a proper diagnosis of a fungal infection, which responded well to targeted antifungal medication. Over subsequent months, Tucker’s wound healed, and she recovered fully.

Following her ordeal, she has abandoned traditional underwear entirely. “I don’t wear underwear at all anymore,” she said. “The only underwear I use since my injury is period underwear because tampons seem so unsafe after everything I’ve been through.”

Reflecting on her experience, Tucker described the incident as “silly and insane” but now views it as a story with a comedic twist. She says her life has improved since recovery, with her able to exercise again and having lost 50lbs.
