New Guidelines Tackle Child Asthma Risks

by Shreeya

As temperatures and humidity rise across China in May, allergens like pollen and mold, along with respiratory viruses, thrive—boosting children’s asthma risks. The updated 2025 Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Childhood Bronchial Asthma, including a public-friendly version, aims to aid management.

Experts note asthma affects 8.69 million Chinese children, with 3.02% prevalence among under-14s in major cities. Symptoms include wheezing and coughing, though some cases (like cough-variant asthma) are easily misdiagnosed.

Prof. Hong Jianguo highlighted triggers like climate change and viral infections, advising families to avoid irritants, carry rescue meds, and seek urgent care for severe or short-lived symptom relief. He emphasized therapy as an effective treatment: it delivers high local drug concentrations with minimal systemic side effects, suitable for both acute and long-term care, and increasingly used at home under medical guidance.

Despite progress, over 20% of cases remain poorly controlled, often due to low awareness and poor medication adherence—leading to frequent attacks and risks to growth and lung function.

Prof. Zhang Hailin stressed home management: regular check-ups, lifestyle adjustments, and standardized. The new guidelines detail diagnosis criteria and symptom-based management, while the public version simplifies advice for all childhood stages.

The China Children’s Asthma Action Plan (CCAAP), using traffic light systems to guide responses, is valued by 90% of caregivers. Experts call for joint efforts from families, hospitals, and society to protect children’s respiratory health.
