Women who experience postpartum hemorrhage (PPH)—excessive bleeding after childbirth—may face an increased risk of cardiovascular disease years later, according to new research.
The study, presented by researchers in obstetrics and cardiology, suggests that PPH is not just an acute childbirth complication but may also serve as an early warning sign for future heart and vascular problems.
Postpartum hemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity worldwide. It occurs in about 3–5% of deliveries, defined by blood loss exceeding 500 milliliters after vaginal birth or 1,000 milliliters after cesarean delivery.
While PPH is typically treated as an emergency during delivery, long-term health consequences are often overlooked. The study highlights the need for continued cardiovascular monitoring in women who experienced PPH.

Women with a history of PPH had a significantly higher risk of developing high blood pressure, heart failure, and stroke later in life.
The risk remained even after accounting for other health factors such as age, pre-existing conditions, and pregnancy complications.
Researchers believe that the stress and trauma of hemorrhage may trigger inflammatory responses or damage to the cardiovascular system that persists over time.
“These findings support the idea that pregnancy complications can serve as an early stress test for future heart disease,” said one of the study’s lead authors. “Women who experience PPH should be informed of their elevated risk and encouraged to monitor heart health in the years following childbirth.”
The study adds to a growing body of evidence showing that pregnancy complications like preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and now postpartum hemorrhage can be indicators of underlying cardiovascular vulnerability.
Doctors are now calling for routine postnatal follow-ups that include heart health assessments for women who had serious delivery complications. Early detection and lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and blood pressure monitoring, may help reduce long-term risks.
