On a cool, sunny Saturday morning, children gathered at Ninepipe Reservoir, eager to try their hand at fishing during the first-ever Kids Fishing Day hosted at the pond.
The event, organized by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) on May 2, offered a day of outdoor fun and learning for both experienced and novice young anglers.
Montana FWP partnered with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes to waive all fishing fees and licenses for the event. Participants received extra rods to take home and lures donated by Westland Seed, while FWP staff were on hand to teach baiting, casting, and fish-cleaning techniques.
Steve Larson, maintenance manager at Ninepipe Reservoir, noted that while other events have been held at local waters such as Spring Creek during Pioneer Days, this was the first to take place at the kids’ fishing pond.
To ensure a successful experience, the Jocko River Trout Hatchery stocked the pond with trout, bringing the full monthly allotment in a single trip.
Young anglers eagerly learned to cast, wait patiently for bites, and attach worms to hooks, enjoying the excitement of each catch. The event offered a hands-on introduction to fishing and a memorable day on the water for children and families alike.
