BMW has revealed its latest electric sedan, the i3, marking the second offering in the automaker’s Neue Klasse lineup. The Munich-based manufacturer claims the new i3 could achieve an EPA-estimated range of up to 440 miles, positioning it as the long-distance leader among production EV sedans.
Redefining the Sedan
The i3 maintains the traditional sedan form but introduces a “2.5-box” design, blending the passenger and trunk areas for a sleeker profile. Unlike the original quirky i3, this new model is a full-sized sedan comparable in dimensions to the Tesla Model 3, featuring BMW’s latest cell-to-pack battery technology for improved aerodynamics and a lower center of gravity.
Performance and Drivetrain
The i3 is powered by dual electric motors, one on each axle, producing a combined 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology underpins both units, with a rear electrically excited synchronous motor and a front asynchronous motor for optimal efficiency and performance.
Interior and Technology
The i3 offers a highly modern cabin, including a panoramic glass roof, 17.9-inch central display, full-width Panoramic Vision screen at the base of the windshield, and an optional 3D head-up display. A new steering wheel design features spokes only at the top and bottom and incorporates BMW’s “Shy Tech” buttons, illuminating only when needed.
The Panoramic Vision display projects key driving information across the windshield, while the optional 3D Head-Up Display integrates navigation and driver-assistance data directly into the driver’s line of sight. BMW Operating System X powers the infotainment system, including an Alexa-enabled AI voice assistant and simplified electrical architecture with eFuses to reduce wiring complexity.
Charging, Connectivity, and Production
The i3 supports vehicle-to-load, vehicle-to-home, and vehicle-to-grid functionality, enhancing personal energy security for owners. North American models will use NACS charging ports, and the 800-volt architecture can handle up to 400 kW charging, though BMW has yet to provide specific charging times. Battery preconditioning can be triggered automatically via route planning or manually by the driver.
Production will begin in Munich in August, with deliveries expected this fall. Additional assembly is planned at BMW’s San Luis Potosí, Mexico plant in 2028. Gas-powered 3 Series production will move to BMW’s Dingolfing factory, the largest in Europe.

BMW has overhauled its electric lineup under the Neue Klasse banner, learning from the original i3’s limited range and slow charging. The new i3 blends performance, design, and cutting-edge technology to appeal to a broader EV audience, signaling BMW’s serious push into long-range electric sedans.
