BMW’s compact crossover X1 is gearing up for a significant mid-cycle refresh as the brand continues its transition into the Neue Klasse era. Spotted undergoing testing in cold conditions across the Atlantic, the upcoming 2027 X1 shows notable design updates while retaining key elements of its outgoing generation.
The facelift introduces a front fascia reminiscent of the recently revealed BMW i3 and iX3, featuring a slim kidney grille integrated into redesigned headlights. The central section of the bumper sports a prominent air intake, complemented by updated hood and fender contours that align with the refreshed styling language.
While the front sees the most dramatic changes, the X1’s profile remains largely unchanged, including door handles, mirrors, and body lines. Even the wheels appear carried over from the current generation, though BMW is expected to offer new alloy designs when the model officially debuts. At the rear, updates are more subtle but include revised taillights, a cleaner tailgate design, and a refreshed bumper. Notably, there are no visible tailpipe trims, but this remains unmistakably an X1 rather than an iX1.
Inside, the facelifted X1 is expected to adopt modern interior elements seen in other Neue Klasse models. This includes a panoramic display spanning the lower windshield, a trapezoidal infotainment screen, and a four-spoke steering wheel. BMW is also likely to introduce updated upholstery and trim options, enhancing the cabin’s premium feel and differentiating it from the outgoing model.
Powertrain options are anticipated to continue largely unchanged, with minor updates aimed at improving efficiency and performance rather than introducing radical new configurations.
The third-generation X1 will celebrate four years on the market in the fourth quarter of this year, and initial reports had pegged its successor for a 2027 launch. However, a 2026 introduction for the facelifted model now seems increasingly likely. The mid-cycle refresh will position the X1 firmly within BMW’s Neue Klasse lineup, combining contemporary styling, advanced technology, and refined driving dynamics.
