A new study has found that women with a genetic predisposition to obesity have a 15% higher risk of death after a breast cancer diagnosis. The study, which followed thousands of older women across more than 20 U.S. states, linked higher genetic risk scores for body weight to increased body mass index and poorer survival. Dr. Dvir says culturally sensitive, multilingual communication from trusted health sources is vital to combating misinformation and improving screening rates.

Specific breast cancer subtypes also reflect broader social and biological complexities. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), an aggressive form, poses unique challenges. Research shows that Black women of West African ancestry face higher rates of TNBC, compounded by social-environmental stressors such as neighborhood deprivation. Chemotherapy side effects like neuropathy, which sometimes cause patients to discontinue treatment, can impact long-term survival, underscoring the need for tailored care and support. Doctors are now considering both ancestry and individual patient values when planning treatments, such as immunotherapy, to improve outcomes and address disparities.

Meanwhile, fresh evidence from Federally Qualified Health Centers shows that patient navigation services—where dedicated staff guide individuals through the screening and diagnostic process—can significantly reduce delays and late-stage diagnoses. In Alexandria, Virginia, a care team saw average wait times for follow-up and diagnosis decrease by nearly half, resulting in a substantial drop in late-stage cancer findings. This improvement illustrates the role of personalized, patient-focused support in making cancer care more equitable, especially for people with limited resources or literacy.

Altogether, these stories highlight the ongoing evolution in breast cancer care, from the importance of regular screening and healthy living to the need for addressing genetic, social, and healthcare system factors that shape patients’ experiences and outcomes.
