Retail pharmacy chain Boots is expanding its weight loss clinics to 17 locations across the UK. This move is part of a strategy to provide people with better access to in-person support for weight management. The clinics are designed to offer private consultations with Pharmacist Independent Prescribers.
During a visit, clients can expect to have their weight, height, and Body Mass Index (BMI) checked. Pharmacists will also review each person’s medical history and overall health to decide the best treatment plan. If necessary, the pharmacist can prescribe medication, combining it with advice on lifestyle and behavior changes for a full approach to weight loss.
Jamie Kerruish, Chief Healthcare Officer at Boots, explained that these clinics aim to help those affected by obesity. He noted that losing weight through diet and exercise alone can be very hard for many people. By offering both medical treatment and ongoing personal support, Boots hopes to make it easier for clients to manage their weight and improve their health outcomes.
This new pharmacy-led model allows patients to receive medical care and behavioral support together, all within their local community store. By doing so, Boots is turning its stores into healthcare hubs, offering more than just traditional pharmacy services. This approach could shift routine weight management away from hospitals and general practitioners to community pharmacies.
With these clinics, Boots is also responding to a growing trend where pharmacies offer more healthcare services. As technology develops, there may also be opportunities to combine in-person care with digital tools, making support for healthy weight management even more accessible.
