Tight Hairstyles Linked to Hair Loss: Dermatologists Advise Softer Styling for Better Regrowth

by Shreeya

Dermatologists are cautioning the public about everyday hair care habits that may contribute to hair loss, stressing that some common routines can make the problem worse. While it is normal to lose between 50 and 100 hairs each day, experts are warning that certain actions—especially those involving excessive tension on the hair and scalp—could accelerate hair thinning and make it harder for hair to regrow.

A frequent mistake identified by specialists is the use of tight accessories, such as snug hats or hairstyles pulled back tightly, especially during physical activities. These accessories can trap sweat, increase the buildup of natural oils and dirt, and put constant stress on hair follicles. Medical experts refer to the resulting condition as traction alopecia, which is hair loss caused by repeated pulling or pressure on hair roots. Over time, this can weaken the hair’s hold on the scalp and lead to noticeable thinning.

To help protect hair health, dermatologists recommend avoiding tight ponytails, braids, or elastic bands that stretch or compress the scalp. Instead, they advise favoring loose hairstyles and using gentle hair accessories. It is also suggested to regularly clean hair with shampoos suitable for your scalp type, as well as to avoid using harsh styling tools or products.

Specialists note that while heat styling, frequent washing, or neglect can all damage hair fibers over time, these factors usually do not cause sudden severe hair loss. However, when combined with tension from hairstyles or accessories, they may contribute to long-term thinning.

If hair loss seems to be getting worse, forms patches, or continues for more than three months, experts advise consulting a dermatologist. A specialist can perform tests to identify the cause of hair loss, whether it is related to temporary stress, genetic conditions, or other scalp disorders, and offer tailored treatments to help slow hair loss or promote regrowth.
