The Iowa women’s basketball team took to the court for its annual “Pink Out” game, an event aimed at raising breast cancer awareness. During the game against Washington, the players chose to honor individuals who are fighting or have overcome breast cancer by wearing names on the backs of their jerseys.
Freshman center Layla Hays made a touching gesture by wearing the name of Hawkeyes assistant coach Randi Henderson, who is a breast cancer survivor. This tribute stood out as one of the most moving moments during the evening at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The game not only held special significance off the court but also saw the Hawkeyes break a three-game losing streak. Iowa achieved a 65-56 victory over Washington, with strong performances from Chit-Chat Wright, who scored 21 points, Hannah Stuelke with 14 points, and Ava Heiden who added 11 points.
The Pink Out game is a yearly tradition for Iowa, meant to show support for the fight against breast cancer and those affected by it. The heartfelt tributes and participation of the whole team highlighted the importance of community support in raising awareness for this cause.
After this important win, the Hawkeyes are set to travel to Nebraska for their next game. The team hopes to carry this momentum forward while continuing to promote breast cancer awareness through their on-court actions and community programs.
