Kate Lawler, the first female winner of Big Brother in 2002, has revealed she recently underwent breast implant surgery after experiencing complications with one of her previous implants.
The TV personality, who first had breast augmentation in 2015, sought medical advice after noticing her left breast had become hard. Speaking candidly on her podcast, Boj and Kate Have A Lot on Their Plate, Lawler explained the ordeal and shared details about her recovery.
“I’ve had a boob job… a boob replacement. I got the surgery done five days ago, so I’m still very much in the recovery period,” she said. Lawler and her husband Martin “Boj” Bojtos are parents to four-year-old daughter Noa.
Reflecting on her original procedure, Lawler said, “Ten years ago, I had my boobs enlarged—a very subtle boob job. I loved them for most of my life, but over time they started to sag, and I thought, I just want a lift.” She added that she opted for the smallest implant possible to achieve a natural look.
Her recent complications, Lawler explained, involved implant encapsulation, a condition in which scar tissue forms around the implant, sometimes causing it to harden and leak. “Ten years later, my left breast goes hard. I go to my GP, who refers me to a breast consultant. I think the worst. She tells me that my left boob has encapsulated and it’s leaking, so I need to get it out,” she said.
Lawler also shared a frustrating experience with an earlier consultation, criticizing a doctor for what she described as poor bedside manner. “He wasn’t for me. He was very rude, and he had just eaten a sandwich. Usually, you’re guided behind a curtain with a chaperone. Instead, I sat opposite him, took my top off, and he just stared at my boobs before measuring and saying, ‘yeah, we can do it.’”
She ultimately found a surgeon who made her feel comfortable, spending an hour in consultation with a nurse to ensure a professional and supportive experience.
Lawler underwent the replacement surgery last week and stayed overnight in hospital. Describing her recovery, she recalled feeling “terribly sick” and briefly losing consciousness, causing a minor accident in her hospital room.
Breast implants typically need replacement every 10 to 15 years, making Lawler’s experience a reminder of the potential risks and maintenance involved with cosmetic surgery.
