The BreastScreen NSW mobile screening unit has arrived in Ballina and will operate at Fawcett Park on Moon Street (river end) until the end of January 2026.
BreastScreen NSW offers free breast screening to help detect breast cancer early. Early detection increases survival rates and reduces the need for major treatments such as chemotherapy or mastectomy.
Patrick Magee, Director of BreastScreen NSW (North Coast), says a regular screening is one of the most important steps women can take to protect their health. He notes that about 90 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history. This shows why screening is important for all eligible women, not only those with known risk factors.
He says the mobile van makes screening easier for local women by bringing the service directly to Ballina. Life can be busy, he adds, and having the clinic nearby encourages more women to prioritise their health.

Appointments are free, take less than 20 minutes, and do not require a doctor’s referral.
Women aged 50 and over are invited to screen every two years.
Women with a family history of breast cancer should speak with their GP about their individual needs.
Anyone with breast symptoms should contact their GP or a health worker as soon as possible.
The Ballina mobile clinic also includes a lift system to assist women with disability or mobility issues. Women with additional needs are encouraged to mention this when booking.
