A new study highlights a significant association between maternal depression and atopic dermatitis (AD) in children, suggesting that mothers of children with active or severe AD may face heightened mental health risks. Published online on October 5 in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, the research emphasizes the importance of early mental health support for caregivers.
Hannah Eunhae Kang of the University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues conducted a comprehensive analysis examining how child AD activity and severity relate to maternal depression across childhood. The study utilized data from 12,124 mother-child pairs enrolled in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a well-established cohort tracking developmental and health outcomes over time.
Study Findings: Depression Scores Rise With AD Severity
The researchers found that mothers of children with active AD consistently exhibited higher scores on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). After adjusting for child sex, maternal age at delivery, maternal race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, maternal history of AD, and maternal history of prenatal and postnatal depression, active AD was associated with an average increase of 0.33 points on the EPDS.
More strikingly, children with severe AD were linked to a 0.68-point increase in maternal EPDS scores. This translates to a 45% higher likelihood of clinically relevant depressive symptoms among affected mothers. The results indicate a clear dose-response relationship: as the severity of a child’s AD increases, so does the mother’s risk of experiencing depressive symptoms.
Critical Periods and Socioeconomic Factors
The study also identified critical periods during which maternal mental health appears most vulnerable. The largest effect sizes were observed when children were between 3 and 7 years old, particularly among mothers managing severe AD in children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This suggests that both disease severity and social determinants of health play a key role in shaping maternal mental health outcomes.
“These findings underscore the need for early and ongoing mental health support for mothers of children with AD,” the authors write. “Regular screenings for depression, particularly for mothers handling severe cases and those from disadvantaged socioeconomic groups, could help mitigate long-term adverse outcomes.”
Conclusion
The study highlights the bidirectional interplay between pediatric dermatologic conditions and maternal mental health. By integrating maternal mental health assessments into routine pediatric care for children with AD, clinicians may be able to identify at-risk mothers earlier and provide targeted interventions.
