Free PCOS Screening Launches in New Partnership to Boost Awareness

by Shreeya

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects one in five women worldwide, bringing with it a complex mix of physical symptoms and emotional challenges, yet many sufferers remain overlooked and silent about their struggles. Onyeka Michael Ugwu, a licensed medical aesthetician and founder of Hello Perfect, recently highlighted the hidden strength and resilience of women living with PCOS during the first-ever Purple Dinner: Dare to Bloom event held in Lagos, Nigeria.

Ugwu explained that her vision for the Purple Dinner was to create not just an event, but a meaningful and empowering space where women could be heard, celebrated, and connected in their shared experiences with PCOS. “This wasn’t just another event,” she said, “it was a reminder that beauty is much more than skin deep—it’s about courage, confidence, and standing tall in the face of life’s toughest battles.”

The event, held at Oniru, Victoria Island, brought together women with PCOS, healthcare experts, advocates, and beauty professionals. This gathering enabled open conversations about the often-overlooked condition that impacts not only ovulation but also fertility, body image, and mental health. Speakers such as Seyi Amao, founder of PCOS Conquerors; Akinyemi Olaleye of Semeda Clinics; and Kauthar Opeyemi Lawal, maternal health specialist, shared insights to foster a deeper understanding of PCOS and how best to support those affected.

A symbolic moment of the evening was the “Dare to Bloom” Tree Paint Session, where guests painted blooming buds on a tree to represent growth and resilience in the face of adversity. This visual metaphor captured the essence of women with PCOS—standing strong and continuing to flourish despite challenges.

Further amplifying support efforts, Hello Perfect announced a partnership with Semeda Clinics to offer free PCOS screenings to its community members. This initiative aims to facilitate early diagnosis, encourage treatment, and reduce the stigma associated with PCOS.

There is growing recognition that PCOS is more than a reproductive disorder; it affects women’s physical health, including skin conditions such as acne and excessive hair growth, and impacts emotional well-being and self-esteem. Advocacy and medical initiatives like the Purple Dinner and partnerships with clinics are critical in raising awareness and offering tangible support to affected women.

These efforts mark a significant advancement in the conversation around PCOS, pushing for greater visibility and healthcare access, while honoring the strength and stories of women living with this condition globally.
