Scientists have made a groundbreaking advance in IVF by successfully creating human eggs from skin cells, a development that could revolutionize fertility treatment for couples with limited options. This innovative technique holds promise for women who are infertile due to age, medical treatments like chemotherapy, or illness, as well as for same-sex male couples seeking genetically related children.
The research, led by Professor Shoukhrat Mitalipov at Oregon Health and Science University, involved taking skin cells from women and removing their nuclei, which contain the full set of 46 chromosomes. These nuclei were then inserted into healthy donor eggs that had their own nuclei removed. Normally, human eggs have only 23 chromosomes, preparing them to combine with 23 chromosomes from sperm during fertilization. The challenge for the researchers was to reduce the number of chromosomes in these laboratory-created eggs to the correct 23 so they could properly pair with sperm chromosomes.
To address this, the team fertilized the eggs and activated them with a chemical called roscovitine. This stimulated the eggs to discard approximately half of their chromosomes into a small structure called a polar body, ensuring the remaining chromosomes could pair with those from sperm as in natural fertilization.
Despite this success, the researchers observed that chromosomes in the lab-made eggs paired randomly, creating embryos with irregular chromosome numbers or incorrect combinations that would not likely result in healthy offspring. Only about 10 percent of the 82 eggs developed to the stage suitable for embryo transfer in IVF, and none were cultured beyond six days, highlighting the current inefficiency of the process.
Professor Mitalipov emphasized that this work is a proof of concept with significant refinement and safety testing needed before it can be applied clinically; the timeline for such advances could span a decade. The ability to generate new eggs from skin cells could be transformative, particularly for women of advanced maternal age, cancer survivors with compromised fertility, and male same-sex couples.
Experts in reproductive medicine have hailed the breakthrough. Professor Richard Anderson of the University of Edinburgh noted that many women lose their eggs due to various conditions, including cancer treatments, and that this technology could offer a path to having their own genetic children. However, he emphasized the need for rigorous safety evaluations before clinical use.
This innovative approach builds on cloning techniques from the 1990s, originally used to create Dolly the sheep, where the nucleus of one cell is transferred into an egg cell that had its nucleus removed. By adapting this for human eggs and combining it with IVF activation methods, the research team is paving the way toward expanding reproductive options.
Beyond fertility restoration, this technology could also support family-building options for same-sex male couples by creating eggs from male skin cells. The prospect of creating viable eggs from skin cells regardless of biological sex could redefine reproductive medicine and society’s understanding of genetic parenthood.
While much work remains before lab-grown eggs can be safely and effectively used in IVF, this breakthrough represents a significant step toward addressing infertility and expanding reproductive possibilities for diverse populations.
