New Research Highlights Impact of Cannabis on IVF Outcomes
A recent study conducted by scientists at the CReATe Fertility Centre in Toronto, in collaboration with the University of Toronto and other institutions, has found that cannabis use may negatively affect female fertility and reduce the chances of successful in vitro fertilization (IVF). The research focused specifically on tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis, and its effects on egg cell development and genetic stability.
The study examined a cohort of 1,059 women undergoing IVF treatment, of whom 62 tested positive for THC in their follicular fluid—the substance surrounding eggs within the ovaries. Detectable levels of THC indicate recent cannabis use, with the compound reaching the environment where egg cells mature. Researchers analyzed both isolated human eggs exposed to THC in laboratory conditions and clinical IVF outcomes among these patients.
Results revealed a clear trend: women with THC present in their follicular fluid exhibited a significantly lower rate of euploid embryos—embryos with a healthy set of chromosomes—compared to those without detectable THC. Specifically, only 60% of embryos from THC-positive patients were chromosomally normal, versus 67% in the control group. This reduction in genetically healthy embryos directly impacts the likelihood of a successful pregnancy and the birth of a healthy child.
Disruption to Egg Development and Genetic Stability
In addition to lower rates of healthy embryos, the study found that exposure to THC accelerated egg maturation but led to more frequent errors in chromosome distribution. Laboratory observations showed defective egg cell structures and a higher incidence of spindle malformations, particularly at elevated THC concentrations. The spindle apparatus plays a critical role in ensuring accurate cell division; abnormalities in this structure can result in miscarriages or developmental disorders.
Genetic analysis performed by the research team indicated that THC alters gene activity within egg cells, especially genes responsible for distributing genetic material during cell division. Furthermore, THC appears to influence genes regulating the extracellular matrix—a network crucial for stabilizing cells and supporting embryo implantation and development.
Experts not involved in the study offered important context for these findings. Dr. Artur Mayerhofer from Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) of Munich described the data as among the best available regarding cannabis’s effects on fertility but noted limitations. He highlighted that disorders affecting the spindle apparatus also increase naturally with age, an influential factor not fully addressed by this research due to its limited sample size.
Dr. Wolfgang Paulus from Ulm University Hospital echoed concerns about statistical power and underscored that women seeking IVF are often older and may have underlying genetic predispositions affecting fertility outcomes. He suggested that THC’s impact might be less pronounced among younger women without such risk factors.
Both experts called for further research to address unresolved questions, including detailed analysis of cannabis consumption habits—such as frequency, timing, dosage, and method—as well as consideration of other lifestyle factors like use of additional substances. Dr. Mayerhofer emphasized that studies focused solely on oocytes provide only partial insight into systemic effects relevant to everyday life.
In summary, while this study provides compelling evidence linking cannabis use with reduced rates of healthy embryo development during IVF cycles, more comprehensive research is needed to clarify these effects across different age groups and consumption patterns. For women hoping to conceive through IVF, refraining from cannabis use may be advisable until further data becomes available.
