A groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) precision medicine test is helping clinicians design more personalized treatment plans for men with prostate cancer.
The ArteraAI Prostate Test analyzes biopsy images to predict which patients will benefit most from hormone therapy, potentially improving outcomes while reducing unnecessary treatment.
Dr. Nicholas James, professor of prostate and bladder cancer research and group leader at The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, highlighted the test’s clinical significance in a recent interview with CURE. He emphasized the importance of identifying men with high-risk, non-metastatic prostate cancer who truly benefit from intensified therapy.
How the Test Works
The ArteraAI Prostate Test employs machine learning algorithms trained on thousands of digitized biopsy slides. By detecting features associated with favorable responses to hormone therapy, the AI predicts whether patients need short- or long-term treatment. After initial training, the software is tested on new biopsy samples to refine its predictive accuracy continuously.
Originally developed using early-stage prostate cancer samples in U.S. clinical trials, the test is now approved in both the United States and the United Kingdom for use as part of early diagnostic workups. While recently approved in the U.K., it has been in use in the U.S. for a longer period.

The AI test can also help identify patients with advanced prostate cancer who might benefit from a second hormone therapy, such as abiraterone. Dr. James explained that the highest-scoring patients were more likely to experience disease progression, while those with lower scores generally responded well to standard treatment.

“This approach could revolutionize prostate cancer care,” Dr. James noted. “It enables us to tailor treatments more precisely rather than treating all patients in broad categories.”
