A Wolverhampton man has expressed his gratitude to his optician after a routine eye test led to the discovery of a rare form of blood cancer.
Robert Campbell visited Flint Optometry in January when optometrist Claire Williams noticed unusual signs during his examination. She observed several haemorrhages at the back of his eyes, prompting an urgent referral to New Cross Hospital. There, Mr. Campbell was diagnosed with lymphoma.
“I had been feeling unwell for some time, but multiple blood tests, a colonoscopy, and an endoscopy had not revealed the cancer,” Mr. Campbell said. “Receiving the diagnosis was a real shock. I am grateful that Ms. Williams identified the issue—I dread to think what might have happened otherwise.”
Following chemotherapy, Mr. Campbell’s cancer is now under control.
Ms. Williams explained the importance of her observations: “While checking the peripheral areas at the back of his eyes, I noticed numerous haemorrhages. About a third of them were highly unusual and rarely seen.”
Her colleague, Peter Rockett, emphasized the broader benefits of regular eye examinations. “Eye tests can reveal more than just vision problems,” he said. “The pupil offers a window into the body, making it a valuable tool for monitoring both eye and general health.”
