A recent study led by Dr. Silvi Shah of the University of Cincinnati shows that women with kidney transplants who conceive through assisted reproductive technology (ART) face higher pregnancy risks. The findings were published in the journal Transplantation and featured in Contemporary OB/GYN.
This research is one of the first large studies examining pregnancy outcomes in women with kidney transplants. The study found these women had increased chances of complications such as high blood pressure, cesarean delivery, premature birth, and lower birth weights in their babies.
“Until now, little was known about pregnancy outcomes using assisted reproductive technology in women with kidney transplants,” said Dr. Shah, an associate professor of nephrology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. “Our findings offer important guidance for doctors counseling patients on family planning and the use of ART.”
While the study showed some risks were higher, other key factors like live birth rates and kidney transplant survival two years after pregnancy did not decline. This suggests that ART is still a safe option for women with kidney transplants who want to have children.
Women with chronic kidney disease often have trouble conceiving naturally. Many can become pregnant after a kidney transplant, but some still face infertility and may need ART to conceive.
Dr. Shah emphasized that the new data helps doctors better care for kidney transplant recipients planning pregnancy through ART. It also supports patients in making well-informed decisions about their reproductive options.
