A recent study conducted in San Francisco has found that certain chemicals commonly found in everyday clothing and plastic products may increase the risk of gestational diabetes in pregnant women, especially those carrying male fetuses.
Researchers analyzed urine samples from 607 pregnant women and discovered the presence of o-anisidine — a chemical used in clothing dyes — was associated with an 18% higher risk of developing gestational diabetes for women expecting boys.
Additionally, melamine, a compound widely used in plastic household items, was detected in all samples. Its presence correlated with an 8% increased risk of the condition.
The study also highlighted the impact of social factors on health. Women who reported high levels of stress or experienced discrimination showed an even greater risk increase, with odds rising by 41% and 133%, respectively.
Emily Lasher, the study’s lead author and science associate at the Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment, emphasized the hidden dangers of everyday exposures: “The clothes people wear shouldn’t come with this hidden risk to their health.”

Gestational diabetes is more than a temporary pregnancy concern — it raises the risk of long-term health issues for both mothers and their children, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular problems. This research underscores the growing worry about synthetic chemicals, like o-anisidine and melamine, which are pervasive yet rarely regulated or monitored despite their links to hormone disruption and oxidative stress.
The findings also shed light on the complex interaction between environmental exposures and social stressors, revealing that vulnerable populations facing discrimination may bear a disproportionate burden of these health risks.
Reducing exposure to such chemicals, especially during pregnancy, is crucial. This calls for increased awareness, better regulation, and more research into how everyday products impact maternal and fetal health.
