Hyundai Unveils China-Focused IONIQ EV Strategy with Earth SUV and Venus Sedan

Hyundai has offered an early preview of a new China-exclusive IONIQ electric vehicle lineup, signaling a renewed effort to strengthen its foothold in the world’s largest EV market and challenge dominant local players such as BYD.

The initiative follows the recent unveiling of two concept models in Beijing — the IONIQ Earth and IONIQ Venus — which form the basis of Hyundai’s market-specific strategy. The Earth concept is positioned as a family-oriented SUV, while the Venus is a streamlined sedan designed to appeal to younger, tech-savvy consumers.

Production versions of both vehicles are set to debut at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24. During the event, Hyundai is also expected to outline its broader electrification roadmap for China. According to Li Fenggang, president of Beijing Hyundai, the upcoming models will emphasize advanced “smart driving” capabilities alongside enhanced in-cabin digital experiences tailored to local preferences.

Distinct from Hyundai’s global IONIQ offerings — including the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9 — the China-focused models introduce a unique design direction guided by the company’s “Lead, don’t follow” philosophy. A defining element of this approach is a “single-curve silhouette,” aimed at establishing a recognizable identity within Hyundai’s expanding EV portfolio.

Signs of progress toward production have already surfaced. A camouflaged prototype of the Venus sedan has been spotted undergoing road tests, suggesting that key design elements from the concept will carry over. Notable features include slim LED headlights connected by a full-width light bar, reinforcing a futuristic aesthetic.

Hyundai has also confirmed that the China-market IONIQ lineup will adopt a new planetary naming system, reflecting a broader design philosophy centered on enhancing the driver experience.

Inside the cabin, the upcoming vehicles are expected to feature Hyundai’s Pleos Connect system, an Android-based platform designed to deliver advanced connectivity and a user interface similar to that of a smartphone. This technology is intended to help Hyundai compete more effectively with the sophisticated in-car systems already offered by Chinese EV manufacturers.

Additional details about the production-ready Earth and Venus models will be revealed during Hyundai’s presentation at the Beijing Auto Show, where the automaker is set to detail its strategy for navigating China’s increasingly competitive electric vehicle market.
