BMW is preparing to launch a refreshed version of its flagship 7 Series sedan, continuing with the striking and somewhat controversial design language introduced in the current generation. Spy photos captured at Germany’s Nürburgring circuit reveal that the facelifted model will keep key styling elements such as the large illuminated kidney grille and the split headlight setup, although the headlights will now be mounted vertically rather than horizontally as before.
The updated 7 Series will feature subtle but important design tweaks. New lighting signatures are visible at both the front and rear, giving the vehicle a modernized appearance while maintaining its bold character. The front fascia also incorporates additional sensors integrated into the windshield and bumper area, signaling improvements in driver assistance technologies.
However, BMW has reportedly decided to drop its previous Level 3 autonomous driving system known as “Personal Pilot” for this update. The costly system, which was limited to low-speed highway use, is being replaced by a more practical Level 2 system. This new technology will offer enhanced convenience features including hands-free driving on highways, eye-activated lane changes, and future navigation-based assistance in city environments. Unlike Level 3, drivers will remain fully responsible for vehicle control at all times.
Inside the cabin, the facelift is expected to introduce BMW’s next-generation infotainment platform called iDrive X, paired with a wide-format head-up display named “Panoramic Vision” that stretches across the base of the windshield. These upgrades mark a move away from traditional instrument clusters toward a more immersive digital experience centered on large screens.
Under the hood, powertrain updates focus mainly on efficiency improvements rather than major redesigns. Inline six-cylinder engines equipped with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology will continue to form the core of the lineup, supported by plug-in hybrid variants. The fully electric BMW i7 will also see advancements, particularly with battery cells offering higher energy density for improved range and performance.
Speculation suggests BMW may expand its top-tier offerings with a revised V8-powered M760 model and potentially introduce a new ultra-luxury variant developed under the Alpina name, now fully integrated into BMW’s portfolio. Production of this facelifted 7 Series is believed to be underway, with an official global debut expected sometime in 2026, possibly during the IAA Mobility event.
Overall, despite mixed reactions to its bold styling since its introduction in late 2022, BMW remains committed to this design direction while enhancing technology and driving aids to meet modern expectations.
