Mercedes-Benz has introduced significant updates to its popular GLS and GLE SUVs for the 2027 model year, featuring enhanced technology, refreshed designs, and improved engine performance. These changes aim to strengthen Mercedes’ position in the competitive luxury SUV market.
The flagship GLS SUV has undergone a major midcycle refresh that enhances its interior technology and powertrain. The centerpiece is a new pillar-to-pillar glass display that houses three 12.3-inch screens for the driver, infotainment system, and front passenger. This upgrade replaces the previous MBUX Superscreen with an advanced MB.OS operating system. The new software integrates vehicle systems, driver assistance, and infotainment with over-the-air updates and an AI-powered digital assistant developed with Microsoft technology.
Inside, passengers benefit from a rear entertainment system featuring two 11.6-inch screens capable of streaming movies or supporting video calls. The GLS also introduces a new augmented navigation head-up display projecting directions directly onto the windshield for safer driving. Safety is boosted by an array of cameras and sensors supporting Level 2++ semi-autonomous driving functions such as adaptive cruise control and automated parking.
The exterior styling of the GLS is subtly refined with a larger grille framed by illumination, redesigned LED headlights featuring the iconic three-pointed star motif, and new digital light headlamps expanding visibility. An illuminated standing star ornament on the hood further emphasizes its flagship status. Powertrain updates include a revised 4.0-liter V8 engine producing 530 horsepower and a mild-hybrid inline-six option with increased torque.
Meanwhile, the midsize GLE SUV also receives a comprehensive update that includes new engines, more tech features, and refreshed styling heavily incorporating Mercedes’ three-pointed star emblem across its exterior details. Inside, the GLE now comes standard with a three-screen Superscreen setup running MB.OS, enhanced by an AI assistant that uses Microsoft, Google, and ChatGPT technologies. Unlike other models, the GLE retains physical buttons for key controls to improve usability.
The GLE’s powertrain lineup sees notable improvements: a turbocharged four-cylinder remains at 255 horsepower but gains responsiveness through an electric compressor; the inline-six offers increased torque; and the V8 delivers higher horsepower and torque with a flat-plane crankshaft design. The plug-in hybrid GLE 500e replaces the previous 450e with a stronger hybrid powertrain offering improved acceleration and an all-electric range around 50 miles. The AMG GLE 53 hybrid also gains power and faster charging capabilities.
Mercedes-Benz showcased these updated models at its Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama, where it also announced a $4 billion investment over the next four years to expand production capabilities. The plant currently assembles various Mercedes SUVs including the GLE, GLS, AMG variants, and electric EQ models. This investment reflects Mercedes’ commitment to strengthening its U.S. manufacturing footprint.
