Volvo Group, Daimler Truck, and Toyota Motor Corporation have taken a significant step toward advancing hydrogen fuel cell technology by signing a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement outlines Toyota’s intention to join the fuel cell joint venture, cellcentric, as an equal shareholder alongside Volvo Group and Daimler Truck. The collaboration aims to combine the strengths of these industry leaders to accelerate the development and commercialization of fuel cell systems for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
Cellcentric, founded in 2021 by Volvo Group and Daimler Truck, focuses on creating fuel cell solutions for heavy-duty on- and off-road transport and other applications with similar demands. With Toyota joining the venture, the partnership will benefit from Toyota’s extensive experience in fuel cell development, production technology, and manufacturing, complementing the commercial vehicle expertise of Volvo and Daimler Truck. The goal is to strengthen cellcentric’s position as a leading manufacturer of fuel cell systems while contributing to global efforts to decarbonize transport.
The three companies plan for cellcentric to remain an independent and autonomous entity, serving a broad range of customers across various heavy-duty sectors. While collaborating on fuel cell technology through this joint venture, Volvo, Daimler Truck, and Toyota will continue to compete independently in their other business areas. This cooperation reflects a growing recognition that collaboration is essential to scale investment efficiently and accelerate technological innovation in hydrogen fuel cells.
In addition to technological development, the partners intend to support the establishment of hydrogen supply chains and infrastructure by working closely with industry associations and other stakeholders. This approach aligns with broader environmental goals such as the European Green Deal and Japan’s hydrogen society initiatives. By pooling their resources and knowledge, the companies aim to create sustainable and effective solutions that can meet the demands of heavy-duty transport while promoting a cleaner energy future.
Executives from all three organizations expressed optimism about the partnership. Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of Volvo Group, highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving net-zero transportation. Karin Rådström, President and CEO of Daimler Truck, emphasized that hydrogen technology complements battery-electric drives for decarbonizing transport. Koji Sato, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation, noted that combining decades of experience in fuel cell technology would help deliver world-class solutions for heavy commercial vehicles.
Cellcentric currently employs more than 560 experts working across multiple locations in Germany and Canada. The company holds around 700 patents related to fuel cell technology, demonstrating its leadership in this field. Should Toyota’s investment proceed following further approvals, it will mark a major milestone in efforts to promote hydrogen as a key energy source for sustainable transport worldwide.
The agreement remains non-binding at this stage as all parties continue discussions toward a legally binding contract subject to necessary regulatory approvals. If finalized, this partnership is not expected to have a significant financial impact on Volvo Group but represents a strategic move toward accelerating innovation in zero-emission technologies for heavy-duty vehicles.
