Volvo Cars has announced plans to increase production of its fully electric EX60 SUV for 2026, following unexpectedly strong early demand in Europe. Retail orders in multiple markets have already surpassed the company’s internal forecasts shortly after the model’s public debut.
Nearly a month after its unveiling, major European markets are reporting higher-than-anticipated order volumes. In Sweden alone, the EX60 has garnered more than 3,000 orders. Volvo attributes part of this surge to its new Care offer, which simplifies the purchasing process and includes three years of complimentary home charging.
Strong Early Orders Shape Production Strategy
The pace of EX60 orders has exceeded even the initial intake for the smaller EX30 SUV, revealed globally in 2023. While the EX30 targets a high-volume segment with a lower price point, the EX60’s strong uptake highlights robust consumer interest in premium electric SUVs.
Currently, EX60 orders are limited to European markets, with U.S. order openings scheduled for later this spring. Volvo said it will maintain a careful ramp-up of production to ensure quality during the early manufacturing phase but is exploring options to expand output at its Torslanda plant in Sweden. Discussions with labor unions include potentially keeping the facility open for an additional week this summer—a first for the plant during that period—if approved.
“That so many customers ordered the EX60 in the first month has surpassed our expectations, and it’s a good ‘problem’ to have,” said Erik Severinson, Volvo Cars’ chief commercial officer. “We are very encouraged to see such strong demand for our game-changing electric SUV, and we are now reviewing our production plans for 2026 as we prepare for the start of customer car production next month.”
Volvo unveiled the EX60 at the end of January, positioning the model as a competitive all-electric alternative to the XC60 plug-in hybrid. The EX60 offers extended range and fast-charging capabilities while maintaining pricing close to the XC60, aiming to accelerate the brand’s electric transition.
