Volkswagen is giving enthusiasts an early glimpse of the 2027 Atlas ahead of its official debut next month at the New York International Auto Show. The automaker has gradually teased details of the SUV, offering hints of updates while keeping the full reveal under wraps.
According to a brief statement accompanying the latest teaser image, the new Atlas “will feature strong, muscular proportions and sleeker exterior surfacing.” The most recent teaser highlights the rear of the SUV, showing a close-up of the taillight and part of the liftgate in a darkened studio.
The design suggests subtle but noticeable changes: the taillights remain part of a light bar that wraps around the corners, but they now appear slimmer and feature a new checkerboard pattern.
Earlier teaser images from winter testing in Quebec indicate that the 2027 Atlas will be more evolutionary than revolutionary. With significant updates already made in the 2024 model, Volkswagen appears to be focusing on refining the SUV’s design rather than overhauling it.
Inside, prototypes reportedly feature a more powerful version of Volkswagen’s EA888 Evo5 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This engine is a step up from the detuned version currently found in the Tiguan, which delivers 268 horsepower.
The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas promises a combination of familiar design enhancements and modest performance upgrades, maintaining the SUV’s recognizable silhouette while offering a refreshed, modern look.
