Breasts have long been regarded as a symbol of femininity and vitality, yet a growing body of research suggests that lifestyle choices linked to breast cancer prevention may require significant changes to everyday habits.
Health experts have already warned that avoiding alcohol, quitting smoking and maintaining a healthy weight are among the most effective ways to lower the risk of breast cancer — the most common cancer affecting women worldwide. Now, emerging research indicates that reducing red meat consumption may also play a role.
Two major studies released this week have added new evidence to the ongoing debate about the relationship between diet and breast cancer risk. The first study, co-authored by Tim Key, emeritus professor of epidemiology at the University of Oxford, is the largest analysis to date examining the link between meat consumption and cancer risk. The findings suggest that vegetarian women have about a 9 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer compared with women who regularly consume meat.
A second study published in The Lancet Oncology, conducted by researchers at the University of Washington, examined lifestyle factors contributing to breast cancer among women globally. The study confirmed several well-known risk factors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity and physical inactivity. However, researchers reported that high red meat consumption had the largest impact among lifestyle risks.
According to the study’s authors, heavy intake of red meat was associated with nearly 11 percent of total healthy life years lost due to breast cancer and other health effects. While rates of smoking and alcohol use have declined in recent years, red meat consumption has not shown similar progress.
Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and one of the most widely cited researchers in clinical medicine, said reducing red and processed meat intake could benefit many people, not only vegetarians.
“The recommendation to avoid processed meat and limit red meat can be beneficial to many individuals,” Willett said. He added that numerous studies have already demonstrated the protective role of fruit and vegetable consumption, particularly for oestrogen receptor-negative breast cancers, which are considered among the most aggressive forms of the disease.
Despite these findings, some experts caution that the evidence linking red meat directly to breast cancer remains less conclusive than for other health risks.
Michelle Harvie, professor at the University of Manchester and research dietitian at the Prevent Breast Cancer Research Unit, noted that the relationship between red meat and breast cancer is not as strong as the well-established links with smoking, alcohol use and obesity.
“Red meat does not stand out in breast cancer research in the same way it does for bowel cancer and heart disease,” Harvie explained. “There are signals suggesting a connection, but the evidence is not yet definitive.”
However, she emphasized the importance of dietary fibre, which has consistently been associated with lower breast cancer risk. Studies suggest that increasing daily fibre intake by 10 grams could reduce breast cancer risk by between 4 percent and 7 percent.
“It may be that red meat displaces healthier foods in the diet,” Harvie said. “If red meat is eaten occasionally within an otherwise balanced diet, it is unlikely to be a major issue.”
Jayant Vaidya, president of the British Association of Surgical Oncology and professor of oncology at University College London, stressed that many cases of breast cancer may be preventable through lifestyle changes.
“A significant proportion of breast cancer is preventable,” he said. “Adopting healthy habits such as exercising regularly, avoiding smoking, eating more fruits and vegetables, and reducing alcohol and meat consumption can all contribute to lowering risk.”
Public awareness of the potential link between red meat and breast cancer remains limited. Major cancer organizations currently highlight processed meat primarily as a risk factor for colorectal cancer, and guidance specifically targeting breast cancer prevention remains cautious.
The debate has intensified in recent years. Breast surgeon Kristi Funk, whose patients have included several high-profile figures, previously argued that nutrition may be one of the most important modifiable risk factors for breast cancer. Her views sparked criticism from some oncologists, who argued that observational research cannot prove that dietary changes alone can reduce an individual’s risk.
Nevertheless, a series of large epidemiological studies has continued to explore the possible connection.
The Nurses’ Health Study, which tracked about 90,000 women, reported in 2014 that higher red meat intake in early adulthood was associated with a 22 percent increased risk of breast cancer over the following two decades.
Similarly, a 2017 analysis from the UK Biobank involving more than 260,000 women found that those who consumed the highest levels of processed red meat had a roughly 10 percent greater risk of breast cancer, particularly among post-menopausal women.
Another investigation, the U.S.-based Sister Study published in 2019, followed 42,000 women and found that those with the highest red meat intake had a 23 percent higher risk of developing breast cancer compared with those with the lowest intake. Researchers also noted that replacing red meat with poultry appeared to reduce the risk.
One challenge facing researchers is separating the impact of diet from other lifestyle factors. Vegetarians, for example, tend to have lower body weight and may also exercise more and smoke less than meat-eaters, all of which influence cancer risk.
Randomized controlled trials — considered the gold standard in medical research — are difficult to conduct for long-term dietary patterns. It is challenging to require participants to eliminate certain foods for extended periods in order to measure cancer outcomes.
Some clinical trials have attempted to assess the effects of broader dietary patterns. The DIANA-5 trial, completed in 2024, assigned breast cancer survivors to follow a Mediterranean-style diet rich in vegetables and fish while limiting red meat. After five years, researchers found no overall difference in cancer recurrence between the intervention and control groups.
However, participants who adhered most closely to the diet experienced about a 40 percent lower risk of their cancer returning, suggesting that consistent long-term dietary habits may influence outcomes.
While scientists continue to investigate the relationship between diet and breast cancer, most experts agree that maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains — while limiting processed foods and excess red meat — remains a prudent strategy for overall health.
