CDC Finds Infection Control Failures Led to Vision Loss After Eye Surgery in New York Clinic

by Shreeya

A recent report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has drawn attention to three cases of severe eye complications following surgery at a clinic in New York City. All affected patients experienced vision loss, and at least one required a corneal transplant due to the seriousness of their condition.

Medical experts have identified a rare fungal infection, known as keratitis, as the main cause of these cases. Although most people undergoing laser vision correction or similar eye surgeries tend to have positive results, this incident highlights the risks associated with lapses in infection prevention inside medical facilities.

The CDC investigation found several serious issues at the New York clinic. Proper cleaning logs for surgical instruments were missing, suggesting that sterilization procedures may not have been strictly followed. Environmental cleaning was also a concern, as the disinfectants used by the clinic were not approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, the clinic used expired medications during eye procedures, which can reduce effectiveness and increase risk. A cool mist humidifier, discouraged by federal health guidelines, was also used in the surgery area.

While the source of the fungal contamination could not be confirmed, experts believe that these failures in infection control contributed to the outbreak. Dr. Todd Ellerin, an infectious disease specialist, emphasized that stronger sterilization practices and adherence to safety regulations might have prevented these cases.

Eye infections after surgery are not common, but patients are advised to watch for serious symptoms such as blurred vision, loss of vision, or pain that does not improve. Most routine eye irritation is mild, but when serious problems arise, patients should seek urgent medical attention. Timely diagnosis and proper care are key to reducing the risk of permanent damage after eye operations.
