Medical teams in Panama and Laos have recently completed vital eye surgery missions, improving the lives of patients in underserved communities. At Santo Tomás Hospital in Panama City, a team from the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) worked alongside Panamanian health professionals to provide 50 eye operations, including eight corneal transplants performed with donated tissue from the United States. The surgeries targeted conditions such as cataracts and pterygium, helping people regain sight and independence. U.S. Ambassador Kevin Marino Cabrera joined local officials to recognize the impact of these efforts, highlighting the benefits for families and the broader community. These missions have been ongoing since 2013, with more than 2,000 Panamanians treated so far. Last year, SOUTHCOM conducted 250 surgeries in Veraguas province. The initiative, known as “Juntos por la Salud” (Together for Health), also brought in specialists for additional procedures and endoscopies, providing care to dozens more patients. Expanded plans for 2026 include a range of trauma and specialist teams deploying across Panama, aiming to reach over 10,000 individuals in need.
Meanwhile, in Laos, China’s first hospital airplane, the C909, successfully performed its inaugural eye surgery onboard in Vientiane. The patient recovered well, marking a milestone for China’s mobile medical program under the Air Health Silk Road vision. This modern medical aircraft, designed to operate in challenging airport conditions, arrived in Laos to begin a public welfare mission running until mid-February. The airplane hospital will deliver mobile diagnosis and treatment, surgical demonstrations, and train local medical staff, focusing on conditions related to the eye, ear, nose, and throat. Donations of medical supplies are also part of the mission, aiming to raise healthcare standards for the local population. The C909 can carry between 78 and 97 passengers, allowing it to bring medical expertise to regions lacking specialized care.
Both Panama and Laos have benefited from international cooperation in healthcare, with eye surgeries restoring vision and hope for many citizens.
