Erie Shores HealthCare in Leamington is preparing to launch a new breast reconstructive surgery program, making it easier for breast cancer patients to receive complete care without the need to travel to Windsor. The initiative will allow individuals to access all their treatments locally, from initial screening and diagnosis to reconstructive surgery and follow-up.
According to Katelyn Dryden, the hospital’s chief financial officer and vice-president of outpatient services, this expansion aims to provide patients with timely, well-organized care close to home. Dryden noted that the expanded services will help connect critical parts of the cancer treatment journey, enabling patients to focus on their recovery supported by trained medical teams.
The County of Essex has contributed $200,000 toward launching the program, part of its ongoing support for Erie Shores HealthCare. The funding has helped purchase specialized equipment needed for plastic surgery, including magnetic seed implants that pin the location of biopsies, making procedures more precise.
Hospital officials explained that with the new program, patients will gain access to several enhanced services. These include extended Ontario Breast Screening program appointments, contrast-enhanced mammography, accessible biopsies, surgical consultations, and reconstructive surgery. Alicia Lutz, clinical director of outpatient services, stated that integrating these services improves continuity of care and fosters better collaboration among healthcare teams.
Essex County Warden Hilda MacDonald said the investment highlights the municipality’s dedication to making healthcare more accessible for residents. MacDonald emphasized that the project will allow more people to receive treatment near their homes, reducing travel and interruptions during a stressful period. Hospital leaders anticipate starting breast reconstructive surgeries in March, further strengthening local healthcare services for patients undergoing breast cancer treatment.
