Health authorities are warning users of GLP-1 weight loss injections, such as Wegovy, Ozempic, and Mounjaro, to be aware of a rare but serious risk of developing acute pancreatitis, a severe inflammation of the pancreas.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has updated product information for both healthcare professionals and patients, emphasizing the need to recognize early warning signs. Symptoms may include persistent, severe stomach or back pain, often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Anyone experiencing these symptoms is urged to seek medical attention immediately.
While there have been hundreds of reports of acute and chronic pancreatitis among users of GLP-1 drugs, the MHRA notes that none have been definitively linked to the medications. Nevertheless, with an estimated 1.6 million adults in England, Wales, and Scotland having used drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro over the past year, regulators say awareness is key.
Dr Alison Cave, the MHRA’s chief safety officer, stressed the importance of patient safety:“For the vast majority of patients, GLP-1 medicines are safe and effective, offering significant health benefits. The risk of severe side effects is very small, but it is crucial that patients and healthcare professionals are alert to the associated symptoms.”
The pancreas, a small organ located behind the stomach, plays a vital role in digestion. Most cases of acute pancreatitis resolve within about a week without further complications. However, severe cases can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening complications.
The MHRA advises that GLP-1 injections should only be taken under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Patients are encouraged to discuss the benefits and risks of GLP-1 therapy with their prescriber before starting, switching, or changing their medication. Adverse events can also be reported through the MHRA’s Yellow Card scheme.
