Soleil Moon Frye Opens Up About Hollywood Childhood, Parenting, and Finding Confidence Through Breast Reduction

Soleil Moon Frye, who captured hearts as the quirky, mismatched-shoed star of 1980s TV hit Punky Brewster, says she feels she’s finally coming into her own at 48.

“When we’re really young, we have so much of that spark of who we want to be, of what we want to do, and then, as life transpires, oftentimes we go on these different roads,” Frye tells Yahoo Life for its Unapologetically series. “I feel like so much of my journey—and this moment—has been guiding me back to who I really am and who I always was. Yet it took the path less traveled to get there.”

That path has recently led Frye into documentary filmmaking. She directed Paramount+’s two-part docuseries The Carters: Hurts to Love You, examining the life and death of singer Aaron Carter through the eyes of his twin sister, Angel Carter Conrad. Frye previously explored her own Hollywood childhood in Hulu’s Kid 90 (2021), which candidly addressed addiction, suicide, and the pressures of growing up in the spotlight. She is currently completing a documentary on singer Shifty Shellshock, a childhood friend and former boyfriend who died of an accidental overdose in 2024.

These professional projects coincide with a period of personal self-discovery. Frye divorced her husband of over 20 years, Jason Goldberg, in 2022; the couple share four children. Afterward, she reconnected briefly with Shellshock, her teenage friend and ex-boyfriend.

“It’s been such a journey getting to this moment, with so much love, faith, pain, and grief,” Frye reflects. “So many experiences of peeling back the onion.”

Finding her voice behind the camera

Frye says she’s thankful to pursue storytelling that sparks meaningful conversations. “Every step—from Kid 90, revisiting old diaries, to my work on Shellshock and The Carters—has led me to deeper empathy and compassion, especially regarding addiction as a disease,” she says.

She adds that her 40s have brought a clarity she lacked in her 20s and 30s. “I cared a lot about what other people thought,” Frye admits. “Now, it’s about doing what feeds my soul.”

Childhood, fame, and the social media era

Growing up as a child star, Frye says she was fortunate to have a supportive family and close friends, though she witnessed peers struggle with mental illness and addiction. She sees parallels in Aaron Carter’s story and the pressures faced by today’s youth.

“So many young people globally are struggling in front of their screens, judged by likes, dislikes, and comments,” she says. “I can’t imagine having social media while going through adolescence and feeling that objectification.”

Frye reflects on her early fame with a nuanced perspective. “When you play a character like Punky, people want you to stay little forever. I went through awkward stages figuring out who I was. Coming back into myself has been incredible.”

Parenting with empathy

Now a mother of four, Frye emphasizes teaching her children self-love and body positivity. “They see that I’ve been on this ride too. We talk openly about awkward stages and the internal work it takes to feel good in your body and mind.”

To decompress from emotionally heavy projects, Frye turns to meditation, long walks, and her children’s embrace. “The last few documentaries were intense. There were days I had to step away from Zoom because of what I was seeing and hearing,” she recalls.

Gratitude and growth

Frye describes her mindset in her 40s as a balance of youthful curiosity and mature gratitude. “I feel like I’m entering my 20s again in spirit. I want to appreciate all versions of myself so that when I’m older, I can look back and truly feel those moments,” she says.

From a child star navigating fame to a filmmaker exploring the complexities of life and loss, Soleil Moon Frye’s journey is a testament to resilience, empathy, and self-discovery.
