RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute—the state’s only National Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Center—have announced the appointment of Dr. Kathie-Ann Joseph as chief of breast surgery and co-director of the multidisciplinary breast program at Rutgers Cancer Institute and the Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center, following a national search.

In addition to her leadership roles at the Cancer Institute, Dr. Joseph will serve as associate chief surgical officer for system integration and quality at RWJBarnabas Health and as director of breast surgical services for the RWJBarnabas Health Southern Region.

In her new position, Dr. Joseph will co-lead a multidisciplinary team of breast cancer specialists and oversee all operational and programmatic aspects of breast surgical oncology. Her responsibilities include guiding clinical practice, advancing clinical research initiatives, and mentoring surgeons, researchers, and providers across the system. She also holds a faculty appointment as professor in the Department of Surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Dr. Joseph joins RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute from NYU Langone Medical Center, where she served as co-director of the Beatrice W. Welters Breast Health Outreach & Navigation Program at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center. She was also a professor of surgery and population health at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

Beyond her expertise in advanced breast surgery techniques, Dr. Joseph is nationally recognized for her leadership in addressing health-care disparities in cancer care. Her work has focused on expanding access to breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment for underserved communities, helping thousands of women obtain critical screening services and ongoing support.

“With a specialization in breast surgical oncology and a strong commitment to patient-centered care, Dr. Joseph exemplifies our health system’s mission to deliver the most advanced, equitable care to the communities we serve,” said Dr. Steven K. Libutti, William N. Hait Director of Rutgers Cancer Institute and senior vice president of oncology services at RWJBarnabas Health.

Dr. Joseph has served as a co-investigator on multiple National Institutes of Health–funded studies, has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, and regularly presents her research at national medical conferences. She is also an active member of several leading national medical organizations.
