A Scottish mother-of-five has spoken out after a breast reduction and reconstruction procedure costing £15,500 left her seriously ill and permanently scarred, following a post-surgical infection that forced doctors to remove one of her implants.
Lisa Hart, 45, from Ayrshire, underwent cosmetic breast surgery at a private clinic in Glasgow in May 2025, hoping to restore her confidence after having five children. But just days after the four-hour operation, she claims her right breast began leaking a bright green fluid, triggering a medical emergency that later left her fighting sepsis.
According to Lisa, she noticed the unusual discharge while changing her dressings about a week after the surgery. She contacted the clinic and was reassured that it was a normal part of healing. However, over the following weeks, the wound deteriorated rather than improved, eventually forming a small hole beneath the nipple. At the same time, she began suffering flu-like symptoms, including fever.
Despite repeatedly alerting the clinic over more than a month, Lisa says she felt her concerns were not taken seriously. By early June, with the wound worsening and her health rapidly declining, she sought emergency care at Ayr University Hospital.
Doctors there quickly determined that she was septic — a potentially life-threatening condition caused by infection — and made the urgent decision to remove the right breast implant. Lisa remained in hospital for 10 days as she received treatment.
Instead of the cosmetic results she had hoped for, Lisa was left with noticeably uneven breasts. Her left breast remains a C-cup, while the right is now a B-cup following the removal of the implant. She says the physical outcome, combined with the trauma of her illness, has taken a devastating toll on her mental and emotional wellbeing.
“I genuinely thought I might die,” she said. “I went into this wanting to feel confident and womanly again, and I came out feeling worse about myself than ever. I now barely leave the house because I’m so self-conscious.”
Lisa also said the stress of the ordeal has affected her health further, contributing to anxiety and heart-related symptoms that require ongoing medical treatment. She currently wears loose clothing to conceal the difference in her breasts.
Because of the complexity of the surgery and the complications that followed, Lisa claims no other clinic is willing to take on corrective work, leaving her with little choice but to return to the same clinic that performed the original procedure.
She now hopes her experience will serve as a warning to others considering cosmetic surgery, urging patients to thoroughly research providers and to act quickly if something feels wrong.
“I just want other women to be more cautious and to know that things can go badly wrong, even in the UK,” she said. “Perfect bodies aren’t worth risking your life for.”

Lisa says she is grateful to have survived and to have the support of her family, but the physical and emotional scars remain.
“I went in wanting people to stop staring at me,” she said. “Now I just want to feel normal again — and I hope sharing my story stops this happening to someone else.”
