Korean Researchers Develop Injectable Skin-Derived Paste Offering Safer, Less Invasive Option for Breast Implants

Researchers in South Korea have developed a novel injectable paste derived from human skin cells that could transform breast reconstruction after tumor removal. The technique aims to restore breast volume with fewer scars and shorter recovery times compared to conventional methods.

Breast removal, whether partial or complete, is sometimes unavoidable during cancer treatment. Traditional reconstructive surgery often involves prosthetic implants or tissue transplanted from other parts of the body, which can be invasive and require long recovery periods. A growing alternative uses acellular dermal matrix (ADM), a type of skin processed to remove its outermost layer while retaining collagen, elastin, and growth factors essential for tissue healing.

Currently, ADM is primarily available in sheet form, used for tendon repair or plastic surgery. However, researchers saw the potential for an injectable form that could fill spaces more efficiently in reconstructive breast procedures. Such a paste could offer a less invasive, more flexible solution for patients.

In their study, published in ACS Applied Bio Materials, the team processed a skin sample donated by a living female participant. The sample underwent decellularization, freezing, and pulverization to create small ADM particles, which were then mixed with water to form a thick, injectable paste suitable for reconstructive use.

The researchers tested the new paste on rats, comparing it with two commercially available ADM products. Over six months, the animals showed no adverse health effects. Interestingly, rats treated with the new paste developed thinner tissue layers around the injected material, suggesting better integration and potentially improved outcomes compared to existing ADM products.

While more safety trials and complex testing are necessary before human clinical use, the study highlights the potential of this injectable ADM paste to enhance breast reconstruction. By offering a less invasive alternative with promising healing properties, this innovation could play a key role in the future of breast implants.
