Clascoterone Delivers Encouraging Phase 3 Results, Signalling a Potential Breakthrough in Hair Loss Treatment

A new experimental treatment for hair loss, clascoterone, has delivered encouraging results in late-stage clinical trials, raising hopes for a potential breakthrough in the management of male pattern baldness.

In the phase 3 study, participants were instructed to apply a clascoterone topical solution twice daily for six months. Researchers then compared hair growth outcomes with those in a placebo group. Results showed that participants using the drug achieved a 539% relative improvement in hair counts compared with placebo during one assessment period, followed by a 168% improvement in a subsequent round. Experts note that such fluctuations are common in hair loss studies.

Clascoterone is applied directly to areas where thinning and recession are most visible. It works by blocking dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone widely recognised as a primary driver of hair thinning and loss in men. By targeting DHT at the scalp level, the treatment aims to slow hair loss and strengthen existing hairs rather than regrow follicles that have already been lost.

According to researchers, the drug appears to be effective regardless of the specific balding pattern, including various stages of Norwood-pattern hair loss. This broad applicability could make it relevant to a large proportion of men, particularly given that around 85% experience significant hair thinning by the age of 50.

Dr. Maria Hordinsky, a professor of dermatology at the University of Minnesota, said the findings highlight the drug’s potential impact. “For decades, patients have had to choose between available treatment options with limited efficacy or safety issues due to systemic hormonal exposure,” she said. “These results suggest clascoterone 5% topical solution could change that equation by delivering measurable regrowth with minimal systemic exposure.”

If approved, clascoterone would become the first treatment designed to block DHT directly at the hair follicle. Further studies are planned to assess its long-term effectiveness and to gather more detailed data on potential side effects.

Dr. Marc Siegel cautioned that, like other anti-androgen treatments, clascoterone may carry risks. “Patients should watch for allergic reactions and, in rare cases, adrenal insufficiency,” he said, noting that blocking androgens can affect the body’s stress-response systems.

Currently, the only widely proven treatments for male pattern hair loss are finasteride, an oral medication, and topical minoxidil. Both aim to slow hair loss rather than reverse it. Specialists continue to stress the importance of early intervention, as once a hair follicle is fully lost, regrowth is not possible and options are largely limited to surgical hair transplantation.

While clascoterone has yet to receive regulatory approval, experts say its trial results underscore continued progress in a field that has seen few major advances in decades. For many men affected by hair loss, the research represents a hopeful step toward more effective and targeted treatment options.
