Scientists have uncovered an unexpected connection between a popular sugar substitute and hair regrowth—one that could improve the effectiveness of minoxidil, one of the world’s most widely used hair-loss treatments.
Minoxidil has long been a staple for people experiencing hair fall. In India and many other countries, it is affordable, easily available, and clinically proven to work for certain types of hair loss. Yet it does not deliver results for everyone, largely because of one persistent problem: poor absorption into the scalp.
Now, researchers believe a compound derived from stevia—the same plant commonly used as a sugar alternative—may help solve that issue.
How stevia entered the hair-loss conversation
The focus of the research was not stevia as a sweetener, but stevioside, a bioactive compound extracted from the plant. Scientists explored whether stevioside could improve the way minoxidil penetrates the skin, allowing more of the drug to reach hair follicles where it is needed most.
According to dermatologists, minoxidil often remains on the scalp surface, particularly in people with oily skin, dandruff, or scalp sensitivity. As a result, even consistent use may fail to deliver optimal results.
What the study found
In the study, researchers used microneedle patches infused with stevioside to deliver minoxidil. Microneedles create microscopic openings in the skin, enabling deeper and more efficient drug delivery without significant pain.
The experiment was conducted on mice genetically predisposed to hair loss. The findings were striking: mice treated with the stevioside-enhanced microneedle patches showed significantly greater hair regrowth than those treated with standard minoxidil.
Within approximately five weeks, hair regrowth covered nearly 67% of the treated area, outperforming other treatment groups in the study.
Why the combination shows promise
Experts suggest stevioside may help minoxidil dissolve more effectively, improving its ability to cross the skin barrier. Dr Gary Goldenberg, a dermatologist at Mount Sinai, explains that minoxidil’s limited skin penetration has always been a challenge. Combining microneedling with penetration-enhancing compounds like stevioside allows more of the medication to reach hair follicles.
In essence, the approach does not alter minoxidil itself but enhances its delivery—potentially increasing its effectiveness.
A clear warning against DIY experiments
Despite the promising findings, doctors strongly caution against attempting home remedies. Mixing stevia powder into minoxidil or applying it directly to the scalp is unlikely to help and may cause irritation.
Dr Ife J. Rodney, founder of Eternal Dermatology + Aesthetics, notes that while microneedling with minoxidil is already used in clinical settings, the addition of stevioside still requires extensive human trials to confirm safety and effectiveness.
