Nine individuals accused of harassing patients and extorting money at Pabna Mental Hospital were arrested and sentenced to 15 days in jail in a joint operation by the district administration and the National Security Intelligence (NSI) on Monday.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate S M Fuad led a mobile court during the operation, handing down the sentences.
The convicted individuals are Nayeb Ali, 40; Mukarram Hossain, 54; Billal Hossain, 43; Abdur Rahim Mallick, 54; Md. Helal, 32; Habib Mandal, 65; Sujan Ali, 42; Zahurul Islam, 26; and Rabiul Islam, 42. All are residents of Hemayetpur Union in Sadar Upazila.
Authorities said the gang had been operating for a long time, routinely harassing patients and their relatives and extorting money. Their actions reportedly deprived genuine mental health patients of proper care and services.
Officials emphasized that such operations will continue to maintain a broker-free environment at the hospital.
