Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital completed the UK’s initial treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) using Boston Scientific’s Rezūm Water Vapour Therapy with the new Rezūm EVO Console.
BPH affects 50% to 75% of men over age 50, causing urgent urination needs, weak streams, incomplete emptying, and potential complications like urinary retention, infections, and kidney damage. In the UK, 1.4 million men live with BPH, straining healthcare resources as cases rise with aging populations.
Medications often serve as first-line therapy for BPH-related lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), but side effects harm sexual function, and adherence drops long-term. Standard surgery like transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) demands anesthesia, operating rooms, and hospital stays, risking bleeding, strictures, and sexual issues.
Rezūm Therapy offers a minimally invasive alternative, injecting steam to shrink excess prostate tissue and ease urethral pressure. Procedures average under 10 minutes as day cases under local anesthesia, enabling same-day discharge and outpatient use.
The Rezūm EVO Console improves on prior models with compact design, mobility, intuitive interfaces, and 3D guides for faster staff training across settings. NICE deems Rezūm cost-saving versus TURP, at over £550 per patient over four years, amid £604 million annual UTI costs linked to BPH.
Prof. Richard Hindley, the hospital’s urology lead with 20 years in BPH care, noted Rezūm EVO’s portability could cut wait times and expand access beyond operating theaters.
