The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has opened a competitive bidding process for its Healthy Kids Dental program contract, the agency announced Tuesday.
The Healthy Kids Dental program provides dental benefits to children covered by Medicaid. It includes essential services such as exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, sealants, and extractions—all at no cost to families. The program operates much like private dental plans and currently serves about 955,000 children across Michigan.
MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel said the contract rebid aims to improve access and quality of care for children. “Dental care remains one of the most unmet health needs for many children, especially those in low-income and rural areas,” she said. “Good oral health is a key part of overall well-being, and this program helps ensure Michigan’s children can receive the care they need for healthy futures.”
The department noted that the updated Healthy Kids Dental model will strengthen networks of dental providers and support patient-focused care. It also promotes preventive practices to help children and families better understand the importance of daily oral hygiene and regular dental visits.
The new contracts for the Healthy Kids Dental program will take effect on October 1, 2026.
